We were first introduced to Detective Gordon Martines, of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, at a Crossroads of the West gun show. Det. Martines was there discussing personal gun rights as well as informing the public of his campaign to run for Sheriff of Clark County Nevada in the upcoming elections.
We later contacted Det. Martines and asked if he could spare some time to talk with us about some of the issues facing local gun owners. We then asked for questions from members of our own as well as other forums and presented those questions during our interview.
Understanding that there are other questions that our readers may be interested in asking, Det. Martines has agreed to take part in an open discussion by answering your additional questions. Please feel free to post your questions in the comments section for him to review and address. I would like state that Det. As a relatively new gun owned, I’d say open carry and concealed carry issues are of particular interest to me. Like many people, I sometimes have to hear the same information over and over again before it sinks in. I’m constantly looking up laws and am almost over-paranoid about making sure I’m doing everything by the book. I have a silly question, officer: if I’m out walking the streets and see an officer nearby, how do you think he’d feel if I just walked up and ask him a few gun related questions? I’ve been tempted to do so a few times, but I can only imagine how many nut cases must approach officers on a regular basis to ask petty questions… I don’t want to be esteemed in that light.
Your answers on open carry and thoughts on civilian ownership of “assault” weapons were encouraging.
Oops… should have been “gun owner” not “gun owned”.
I’d also be interested in hearing the Detective’s thoughts on medical marijuana users and whether or not he feels that such things should affect a user obtaining a CCW permit.
That question, by the way, was recently discussed in a handgun class I took. Just wanted to hear what a real cop thought about such matters.

Hopefully I will be able to answer your questions fully. You should know right off that I was raised around guns, at twelve years old I was a member of 6 shotgun clubs shooting both trap and skeet, I had a teacher that was a 30 yr retired Marine Gunnery Sgt, that was rated “Distinquished”. in rifle and shotgun, he name was William Walters from Barstow, Ca. It was not uncommon for him and I to come home with the 1st Place Trophys, me in the Juniors and him in the Masters when shooting competition and round robins.
I joined the Hermosa Beach Police Dept., Ca, in 1974 and served that community for almost four years in Patrol. I then joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Dept in March of 1978 and have been engaged in just about every assignment the dept. had to offer. I have been a Detective in the Robbery/Homicide Bureau for the last 16 years. To say that I have been directly or indirectly involved of every aspect of police work would be a understatement. Getting down to business. Clark County Nevada is my home, you are my neighbors even the criminals, if we do not look after one another then what is the point? I believe when the government imposes laws, rules, and restrictions which without due process and against the Constitution of the United States of American, somebody has to stand up and tell them they can’t come into our home and push us around without our permission.
Gun Control is exactly that, “Control”. It doesn’t say anywhere in the Constitution that you have to register your Gun. Gun registration does nothing for crime fighing, nor does it contribute to solving crimes. Law abiding citizens are the only ones that register their guns. All a law abiding person needs to do is write his/her gun serial number on a piece of paper and put that piece of paper somewhere safe. If some critin steals your gun, report the theft to the police and give them the serial number from your paper. You might, just might get your gun back later on. That happened to me and I got my 22 cal. Smith and Wesson, Chief back, that is all registration does.
I am a big fan of Open Carry. Lets break this down once and for all. The Police cannot protect you directly from harm, on rare instances the police may be in close proximity to intervene (very lucky), but mostly it is after the fact. It is to the point that you must learn how to protect yourself and your family, learn to avoid potential trouble spots and situations, and most of all when you are really in the mix, become good witnesses and be willing to identify and testify in court. The police are essentially blind and deaf without your help. This is just old school talking.
I am not part of the good old boy system and have been a maverick type of cop my whole career, my motto is “Break the Law Go to Jail”. There was a question on how I would go about going against state law. I would never go against the law, I would however, as Sheriff, re-allocate resources to better serve the public and thus gun registration and the resources use to make it work would be transfered to somewhere better used. I would support and lobby for an amended law regarding gun registration, that would include it being taken off the books. Understand that I am a man of my word, I mean what I say, and I say what I mean. Probably why I am not so popular with the upper management of the police dept. It won’t matter, if the miracle occurs, most them won’t be there anyway.
We are all coming into some hard times folks. The police depts Patrol Division is the only unit that can not be shortchanged, all other units are expendable, the real losers in this budget crunch are the ctizens of this community. I am hoping to tap into a resource when I become sheriff, and that is the large number of retired cops and military that wish to volunteer and do some police work in our community. I will bring back the “Jeep Posse”. I would hope that some of you would join me.

I was the Treasurer for the Clark County Sheriff’s Jeep Posse for several years before relocating to another state in 1977. In my mind the CCSJP was the greatest auxiliary in the state serving the community. And I might add, as you are well aware, completely volunteer with no expense to the taxpayer.
Could you please bring me up to date on their demise?

This guys a Tool,just by the shirt he is wearing.I do support some of his policies,but there are to many people out there with CCW that in my opinon are not well trained enough to do so.Qualifications to get a CCW is not Stringent enough.There are some guys out there who will Triple the price of there class and give a one hour class course.Unbeilivable!I have seen many people with CCW who cant shoot for shit!I feel if you cant unholster a weapon from atleast one position and hit a moving target on demand,You shouldnt carry Period!To mant people think its the movies when in reality its much diffrent.Thats my 2 cents.
I’m not 100% sure from listening to Detective Martines if he is acknowledging the difference between open carry and concealed carry. He also said that gun registration is a State law, and I think the blue card registration is Clark County only. There is definitely some confusion there and that worries me a little. But generally he sounds very strongly in favor of gun rights and that’s a good thing.
Either way he’s pro-gun and pro-carry.
The blue card thing is a State Law that requires registration of handguns based on the size of the county. Clark County happens to be the only County in the state which reaches the requirement number but that doesn’t make it a County law.
