I stopped by the Young Manufacturing booth to check out their new ICE-15 rifle. This is a side charging AR-15 type design that moves the charging handle towards the top front of the hand guard. This is still a direct impingement system, however it does take some of it’s design factors from piston systems. The ICE-15 also uses a bolt carrier group that is about half the length of a standard BCG. The side charging handle can be moved to either side of the gun to accommodate both right and left handed shooters.
While at his booth, Dan Young and I also discussed the standard Y/M side charging upper and BCG. I told him I’ve been using his product for a few years and then discussed some of my concerns as well as how it stacks up against the competition. Dan informed me that he has addressed the concerns I had and even offered to send me out a newer version for me to check out and compare side by side with both the older Y/M product and some similar products. I’m looking forward to sharing these comparisons in a future post.
